Our Opportunity:

The Compliance Department coordinates the firm’s compliance efforts, and performs an advisory, monitoring, testing, and education role to support management's supervisory responsibility and its efforts to achieve compliance with the financial services industry rules and regulations, and policies of the firm. The Financial Crimes Compliance (FCC) group, which includes the Corporate Anti-Money Laundering Department (AML) and Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), assists across the firm in the assessment of risk presented to our business units and in the affirmative commitment to comply with all laws and regulations governing the identification and reporting of suspected money laundering activities, as well as activities prohibited by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) laws and regulations. The department performs, among other responsibilities, AML transaction monitoring and SAR filing, OFAC screening, as well as advisory and control functions.

What you’ll do:

As a direct report to the Managing Director of the Financial Intelligence Analytics & Reporting Team, the Senior Manager has a pivotal role developing the firm’s ability to proactively develop analytical products and reporting on the risks and trends related to a multitude of financial crimes such as money laundering, terrorism financing, insider trading, market manipulation, internal and external fraud, and bribery. Through the data analytics performed for the department’s FIU, the Senior Manager will contribute to thought leadership in understanding the emerging quantitative trends and patterns of financial crime risks facing Schwab as well as help to enhance controls throughout the enterprise.

Responsibilities will include the gathering and management of metrics and data used in the annual AML and OFAC Risk Assessment program in a manner that ensures consistency with regulatory requirements, industry standards, and law enforcement recommendations. This entails collecting and analyzing customer and transaction/activity data, working collaboratively with compliance partners, including the BSA/AML Officers and Deputies for various Schwab entities, and ensuring the timely completion of Risk Assessment deliverables, among other actions. The Senior Manager will leverage the Risk Assessment results to identify potential gaps or weaknesses and propose processes and policy changes to strengthen compliance and mitigate risk base on the analysis of the data and metrics.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Liaise with the Compliance department and other key stakeholders and partners with respect to technology projects and other initiatives impacting the Financial Crimes Compliance department.

  • In support of the AML and OFAC Risk Assessments, collect, analyze and present customer and transaction/activity data.

  • Identify additional areas of opportunities to enhance analytics, reporting and governance.

  • Act as a contact with business and technology partners to ensure that the metrics and data used for the Risk Assessment meets expectations.

  • Format metrics from Tableau that are used to calculate the Inherent Risks and Effectiveness of Controls and Residual Risk ratings for the AML/OFAC Risk Assessment.

  • Query and mine large data sets to discover transactional patterns, examine financial data using predictive/advanced analytic methodologies.

  • Perform ad hoc analytics on large and diverse datasets.

  • Provide recommendations to develop methodologies to monitor various AML outputs on an on-going basis.

  • Assist in the development of tools to perform on-going modeling, testing, and tracking of suspicious broker/dealer and bank activity.

  • Identify transactional anomalies, write programs and run specialized queries that can help streamline compliance processes and reduce “false positive” alerts, providing staff more time to review more-targeted cases of suspicious activity.

  • Identify additional areas of opportunities to enhance analytics and metrics reporting as it applies to the data used within the Financial Intelligence Unit.

What you have:

  • 5-7 years of experience in an applicable risk management/data analysis environment

  • Strong/advanced proficiency using Microsoft Excel (e.g., template creation that utilizes formulas that link information from disparate areas [tabs] throughout the spreadsheet, conditional formatting, macro creation, etc).

  • Experience in the financial services industry (banking and/or securities) with awareness of BSA/AML compliance or Risk Management.

  • Success at working with high-performing, diverse, cross-functional work teams rallied around the strategy.

  • An ability to compile and process data from disparate sources, infer what the information suggests about client behavior and adjust how they are monitored, using advanced metrics to gauge the overall quality of their screening procedures

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze issues and develop plans on a systemic level, thinking through potential connections and impact across the Schwab ecosystem, and developing roadmaps to achieve long term vision through short term deliverables

  • Ability to review, summarize, and analyze data via standard statistical methods as well as to develop new, analytical solutions relative to the specific requirements and datasets of concern

  • Experience working with Tableau

  • Strong knowledge of SAS or other statistical software packages and programming language including SQL.

  • Strong knowledge of MS Access and other Microsoft Office products

  • Substantial experience with one of the following RDBMS’s: Oracle, SQL Server, Teradata.

Desired:

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Strong understanding of the BSA, the current anti-money laundering regulatory landscape and related criminal activity relevant to securities businesses such as securities fraud, insider trading, and market manipulation among others.

  • Advanced degree in Statistics or related field (e.g. Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science) considered a plus.

  • Proven experience in analyzing data in the financial services sector, or related industry (tuning and optimizing AML monitoring systems and scenarios is a plus).

  • Cyber security knowledge considered a plus.

  • Certified AML Specialist (CAMS) and/or Certified Financial Crime Specialist (ACFCS).

  • Knowledge of OpenPages platform considered a plus.

  • Working knowledge of Visual Basic programming.

  • Proficiency using Microsoft PowerPoint to develop presentations that include callouts, graphs, flowcharts, and similar methods to convey information succinctly but clearly for executive level consumption.

  • Ability to work in a team as well as independently.
