Our Opportunity:

The Benefits Department provides employees access to benefit plans and programs that support ownership of their health and well-being.

This role will provide exposure to all aspects of benefit plan design and management primarily focused on Health and Welfare and Wellness plans and programs. You will have a wide range of hands on opportunities, as very few tasks are outsourced or performed by consultants or brokers, including: RFPs, contract negotiations, implementations, administration, operations, audits, communications, problem resolution, reporting and trend analytics, financial forecasting, acquisitions, system testing and annual events like benefits open enrollment.

The Senior Manager is expected to add value to the plans and programs they manage, as well as make significant contributions on a wide range of department initiatives and goals. This role is an individual contributor and will report to the Managing Director of the Benefits Department

What you’ll do:

75% Benefit Plan Management

  • Manage all aspects of Health and Welfare and Wellness plans and programs as assigned.

  • Resolve and/or research complex employee benefits issues that are escalated by internal call center or vendors/providers.

  • Maintain Plan Documents and vendor contracts; negotiate and present recommendations to management for contract renewals.

  • Partner with legal, HRIS, finance, vendor management and various departmental groups to effectively perform all aspects of plan oversight and vendor management.

  • Maintain compliance of benefits programs, including coordinating the annual update of the Summary Plan Description (SPD), Summary of Material Modifications (SMM) and ensuring all required regulatory notices are filed and employee communications distributed as required.

  • Analyze claims, utilization and financial plan data and make recommendations for plan and program enhancements based on analysis.

  • Provide training and education to the internal HR Direct call center team on benefits plans and programs.

  • Develop communications and ongoing education for employees surrounding benefit plans and programs.

  • Lead and participate in cross-functional teams executing projects tied to benefit plan strategies.

  • Keep abreast of legislative activity affecting plans; maintain awareness of industry trends and practices.

  • Participate in system set-up, testing and maintenance of all plans.

25% Design Benefit Programs

  • Interpret benefit plan policies, legislative changes, and legal requirements; make appropriate plan design recommendations.

  • Lead RFPs and vendor implementations.

  • Integrate acquisitions for all benefits programs.

  • Contribute to the development, recommendation and implementation of future plan designs and assist with strategic benefits planning.

  • Develop presentation materials for Senior Leadership meetings.

What you have:

  • 8+ years of specific benefit plan experience working on a variety of benefit programs including - medical, prescription, dental, vision, life insurance, wellness, employee assistance programs, flexible spending plans, and health savings accounts.

  • Experience in managing all aspects of benefit plan and program management including items such as internal and external audits, compliance activities, developing employee communications and cost analysis tracking. Strong technical knowledge of benefit plans and programs.

  • Experience in negotiating and managing insured and self-insured contracts and agreements.

  • Knowledge of current benefit trends, federal and state benefit laws and regulations; awareness and familiarity with current impacts and developments (e.g. basic awareness of Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act).

  • Strong organizational, analytical, problem solving and project management skills.

  • The ability to multi-task and work on various projects simultaneously keeping them on track and providing clear status updates to management.

  • Ability to work in a lean, high volume, fast-paced, deadline oriented environment with minimal supervision.

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, successfully handle and prioritize multiple competing assignments and effectively manage deadlines.

  • Respond to employee inquires and questions that are escalated from our internal call center.

  • The ability to work well with various groups and individuals across the organization.

  • Experience in evaluating, creating and presenting program recommendations and plan information to both employees and leadership in formal and informal settings.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to articulate complex issues succinctly.

  • Experience working on highly cross-functional project teams to produce meaningful results. Must be able to work effectively with both business and technical stakeholders at all levels.

  • Technically savvy and up to date with the use of current Microsoft Office tools.

  • Experience in opening and managing an onsite/near site health center a plus.

  • Experience in working with international benefits a plus.

  • Experience managing Disability and 401(k) plans a plus.

  • Experience managing outside consultants.

  • Strong project management skills.

  • Ability to manage all aspects of the benefit plan or program independently

  • Travel will be based on business need up to 20% and is primarily in October and November.

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, management or other relevant discipline is preferred – equivalent work experience will be considered.
