Our Opportunity:

The Schwab Center for Financial Research (SCFR), a division of Charles Schwab & Co., provides top-quality research, timely market insight and practical guidance to help investors and registered investment advisors make better decisions. Groups within SCFR provide equity ratings, asset allocation strategies, advice and planning tools, fixed income insight, expert communications and guidance on technology-driven investing. SCFR is distinguished by its authoritative yet highly engaging expertise on all topics related to the markets and investing.

What you’ll do:

Work with SCFR - Managing Director, Fixed Income and Income Planning, to:

  • Deliver expertise, in writing, speaking, training, the Schwab planning community, and other forums on personal taxation, Social Security, estate planning and other financial planning topics

  • Promote Schwab's expertise on financial planning topics in presentations to reps and clients, including travel

  • Support IS and Institutional partners to help and launch new financial planning tools, products, and offers

  • Write articles on financial planning topics, in particular personal tax issues, on, On Investing magazine

  • Speak, at a layman's level, with the financial press, when needed, on financial planning and tax topics, including Social Security, estate planning, and general personal finance

  • Simplify financial planning topics, to help reps and clients turn advice into action

The Director will lead analysis, content development and deliver on key financial planning issues, focused on tax and estate planning. They will serve as subject-matter expert and complete research and commentary to help Schwab representatives contribute to and clients achieve financial success.

The Director position will work with the SCFR – Managing Director, Fixed Income and Income Planning and a small research team as well as business partners in Schwab Investor Solutions (IS) and Client Solutions (CS). This will include Schwab Financial Consultants, Portfolio Consultants, product development, marketing and communications, training, and media to deliver financial planning and wealth management to clients with varying levels of expertise and wealth.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Research & Analysis

  • Serve as subject-matter-expert on key financial planning and personal finance topics, with a focus on tax and estate planning, but also other areas including general planning, planning tools, planning process, retirement planning, education planning and insurance

  • Proactively identify, research, and summarize best practices and action steps in articles, job aides, and training for reps and clients

  • Exhibit curiosity, impartiality, and critical thinking skills with a client focus, to help Schwab deliver consistent, modern advice in financial planning and wealth management

  • Communication

  • Distill, refine and communicate in writing, presentations, training, podcasts, rep planning community, and other formats on key financial planning topics

  • Review and write new articles, job aides, summaries and visuals to simplify financial planning topics for reps and clients

  • Work collaboratively with business partners to develop and support financial planning offers and products

  • Planning & Technology

  • Serve as subject-matter-expert, when needed on financial planning tools including SunGard, MoneyGuidePro and other planning software

  • Work with business partners and Schwab reps to develop best practices when using tools and technology

  • Evaluate and help document key assumptions and methodology in planning tools, including evaluation of tax and estate planning strategies, Monte Carlo simulation, and other quantitative and qualitative analysis

What you have:

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • Active FINRA Series 7

  • 12+ years’ experience delivering tax, estate planning, Social Security, and other advice to retail clients

  • Passion for financial planning and wealth management research and advice, as a way to improve client outcomes

  • Ability to talk about complex financial planning concepts and strategies in an accessible way verbally and in writing

  • CFP required

  • CPA preferred, with a focus on personal tax and estate planning
