This position will be an employee of Charles Schwab & Co. and will be subject to its human resources and risk policies and procedures, but will report to and be accountable to Schwab Charitable for day-to-day activities.

What you’ll do:

The position of Charitable Strategist is responsible for reviewing complex asset contributions for acceptance by Schwab Charitable, working directly with donors, their advisors, and corporate and business lawyers to facilitate charitable transfers of these assets. The Charitable Strategist role understands and articulates charitable planning issues effectively, using a consultative approach to provide agnostic guidance on charitable giving strategies to support comprehensive wealth management solutions to HNW and UHNW. As a subject matter expert, the Charitable Strategist partners closely with internal partners to provide educational support for client and advisor questions and planning needs. This role is also responsible for the delivery of presentations to partner and client public speaking events.

  • Complex Asset Acceptance Respond to inquiries related to the mechanics and potential tax implication of the contribution of illiquid assets.

  • Independently review transactions related to private companies, restricted stock, and pass-through entities to determine suitability for charitable contribution and best route for acceptance.

  • Perform all aspects of illiquid asset due diligence, including document review and thorough assessment and mitigation of risks and ultimate approval for acceptance.

  • Facilitate the transfer, acceptance and liquidation of approved complex asset contributions.

  • Charitable Planning and Education Consult with High Net Worth Schwab clients and top Schwab advisors regarding clients’ charitable planning needs in the context of clients’ charitable planning within their overall wealth management strategy, with particular attention to topics such as income and estate tax planning, trust, estate and post-mortem planning, legacy planning, closely-held business transfer planning.

  • Effectively discuss alternative solutions in the illiquid asset space; and differentiate Schwab Charitable program thoughtfully and respectfully.

  • Subject Matter Expert Respond to internal partner questions and requests for information relating to tax, corporate transactions, securities law, alternative investments, exempt organizations, and estate/charitable planning strategies.

  • Support Business Development and Marketing with development and review of educational and marketing literature to ensure content accuracy and clarity.

  • Cross enterprise partnership to develop and implement acquisition and service to support Schwab Charitable sales initiatives and consult internally and externally, in support of a variety of business development opportunities

What you have:

Required Skills:

  • Qualified candidates possess strong organizational, writing and verbal communication skills and a passion for teamwork, service and execution

  • Bachelor's degree and J.D. required

  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience with the areas below:

  • Law firm or equivalent transactional experience highly preferred including: individual and corporate tax, exempt organizations, corporate transactions and estate planning, financial services/wealth management, securities law and alternative investments

  • Expert-level financial, tax and philanthropic planning knowledge, with specific attention to tax, corporate transactions, securities law, alternative investments, exempt organizations, and estate planning strategies

  • Knowledge of alternative charitable giving solutions in the illiquid asset space; and ability to review and understand financial statements with demonstrated understanding of accounting/tax issues

  • Knowledge and experience in partnership taxation & UBIT

  • 4+ years public speaking experience

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective professional relationships at all levels of organizations, boards of private and public companies, and in the charitable and advisor communities

Preferred Skills:

  • LLM in Taxation, or CPA strongly preferred
