Our Opportunity:

Schwab is looking for a Sr. Database support engineer– NoSQL to join our newly formed Cloud Operations team. The support engineer will perform administration and engineering tasks for multiple databases such as MongoDB, Redis, GigaSpaces across all environments. The ideal candidate will be responsible for supporting fast-paced complex distributed database environments in UNIX/Linux AND Cloud platforms. Successful candidate will have the ability to rapidly troubleshoot complex technical problems under pressure and ensure highest quality of service is provided in an efficient, effective, and proactive manner. Also responsible to identify and deliver infrastructure and database projects in support of business initiatives, and platform improvements and enhancements for continuous operations.

What you’ll do:

  • Ensure availability and performance of MySQL databases in support of multiple enterprise critical applications

  • Proactively monitor and optimize system performance using available monitoring and DB optimization tools

  • Collaborate with operations and engineering teams in the design and architecture of database systems

  • Design and develop DB tooling to automate operational tasks for provisioning, upgrades, patches, and backups to empower product engineering teams

  • On regular basis analyze the queries executed across environments, discover bottleneck queries, and propose optimizations.

  • Identify Root cause analysis of production-related database issues, collaborate with engineering teams for solution

  • Thoroughly create, publish, and maintain documentation on the processes, procedures, and database administration activities

  • Respond and resolve database related issues within SLAs

  • Manage database access permissions and privileges for users

  • Develop, manage and test back-up and DR plans.

  • Work closely with IT project managers, solutions architects and software developers.

  • Provide design assistance and consulting including identification and documentation of design concerns related to performance, security, auditability, availability

What you have:

  • 8 + years of overall IT experience related to database development and administration

  • 3 + years of hands-on NoSQL DB administration experience preferably in a Cloud based environment

  • 3 + years of Linux proficiency (as a power user and administrator)

  • Solid working experience of NoSQL environments, e.g. MongoDB, Redis, Gigaspaces and others

  • Experience with database administration and production support including adding users, permissions, backups, archiving, recovery, monitoring, etc

  • Must have strong database design skills, able to explain database schema that he/she have designed, including tradeoffs they made and why

  • Experience with database replication and scaling issues

  • Detail-oriented, well organized, quick learner with very strong technical aptitude and the ability to work concurrently on multiple projects.

  • Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with Database Administrators and application teams

  • Experience with modern 24x7 production environments

  • Experience in one of the scripting languages (PHP, Powershell, Python, or Perl)

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required

  • Experience in managing any databases in Cloud environment is a plus.

  • Experience building Pivotal Cloud Foundry service broker is a plus

  • MongoDB certification from Mongo University as plus

  • Hands on Database experience with Azure, AWS, Google Cloud or one of other major IaaS providers a plus

  • Knowledge of Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) a plus

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or related fields is required

  • Financial Industry experience is a plus
